This object is an antique brass "Batwing" buckle, likely dating from the mid-1700s to the early 1800s. I found this early buckle on an early colonial settlement site east of Millhaven Ontario in 2014.
Function: Typically used as heavy-duty buckles for shoulder slings (baldrics) to carry items like powder horns, canteen straps, or sword belts.
Material: Often constructed from cast brass or copper-alloy.
Design: Characterized by its ornate, shaped frame that served both functional and decorative purposes.
Authenticity: Authentic pieces are often recovered from 18th-century home sites and battlefields by metal detectorists like me.
Market Value: Because they are iconic "relic" finds, they are sought after by militaria collectors and are often sold at specialized auctions focusing on early American & Canadian history.
