This is an exquisite brass example of 19th-century military regalia, displaying the elegance and precision of the Victorian era. This beautifully crafted piece, made from durable brass, was an essential part of a British Cavalry Officers horse harness. It was used primarily to control and stabilize the movement of the horse during rigorous maneuvers. Adorned with intricate engravings and often featuring regimental insignias or other patriotic symbols, it reflects the craftsmanship and attention to detail characteristic of Victorian military accessories. The martingale not only served a practical purpose but also conveyed a sense of pride and identity within the British cavalry ranks. Collectors and historians alike treasure these items for their historical significance, aesthetic appeal, and the glimpse they provide into the disciplined and ornate world of Victorian military equestrianism.
I found this 19thc Cavalry Officers Martingale on an early colonial settlement site east of Millhaven Ontario in 2014. I have also posted the article that I wrote for Western Eastern Treasures Magazine about my find. *The Riker Box the badge is displayed in is not included.*
Purpose: Primarily, they functioned as a running martingale to prevent the horse from lifting its head too high, which could interfere with the rider, especially during intense cavalry maneuvers.
Design & Composition: These pieces were typically made of heavy-duty leather, with a central, highly polished brass badge or badge assembly positioned on the horse's chest.
Embellishments: Badges frequently included detailed, engraved regimental symbols, Royal crests, and honours (e.g., Waterloo, Peninsula).
Significance: Beyond utility, they were symbols of pride, often used by officers to highlight the prestige of their unit, making them highly collectible artifacts of Victorian military history.
These items are highly sought after by collectors, particularly those with authentic, intricate, or marked, engraved details. Please email or text me at 905-410-4088 with any questions.
