These are Confederate knapsack hooks (also referred to as buckle portions or catches) dating from the American Civil War era. These hooks were used to fasten leather straps on knapsacks. The rectangular portion often included a thin tongue for strap adjustment, while the circular opening connected to a separate hook piece.

These were all found on a property north of Pickering Ontario along with a number of 19thc British Cavalry Officers Martingales. You get all three buckles shown for the asking price.

Historical Identification:
Origin: These were typically part of imported knapsacks manufactured by S. Isaacs Campbell & Company in London, which supplied various articles of war to the Confederacy.

Function: They served as the ring portion or catch part of a two-piece hook set used to secure military knapsacks.

Material and Construction: They are made of cast brass and often feature a brown or green patina when excavated from historical sites.

Archaeological Context: These items are frequently discovered by metal detectorists at Confederate camp sites and battlefields.
