This 1996 Gibson 1-S is a rare slope-shouldered dreadnought acoustic guitar produced in Bozeman, Montana.
Featuring a spruce top, and mahogany back/sides, it is known for high-quality, lightweight construction.
The key feature of this guitar is that it was designed and produced with a satin finish as a prototype for a more economical version of the J45/J200 models.
It plays and sounds like a J45, but without the high price tag.
It was produced in the USA at Gibson's Bozeman, Montana plant in 1996.
Sound/Playability are best described as having low action, a clear full tone, and excellent playability.
So basically, this model was experimental to determine how musicians would take to a satin finish on Gibson acoustic guitars and was introduced late in 1996.
As it turned out the public was not keen on satin finished acoustic guitars and even though Gibson tagged them with a lower retail price than a standard gloss finished J45, the 1-S did not catch on and was subsequently discontinued.
