Dog Trainer Apprentice (Hands-On Role)
Description
Dog Trainer Apprentice (Hands-On Role)
Bark Brigade Dog Training — Calgary, AB
Part-Time → Paid Apprenticeship → Junior Trainer Career Track
Bark Brigade Dog Training is hiring a Dog Trainer Apprentice.
This is not a daycare or casual “dog lover” position. This is a hands-on role within a structured training environment, working toward becoming a professional dog trainer.
You’ll start by learning the fundamentals of dog handling, daily operations, and structured routines. From there, you’ll progress into our apprenticeship program, where you’ll learn how to take dogs from untrained or inconsistent behaviour to reliable, real-world obedience — both on and off leash.
Most dogs we work with are typical pet dogs that need structure, clarity, and follow-through. From time to time, we also take on more challenging behavioural cases, and you’ll be exposed to those as your skills develop.
For the right person, this role offers a clear path into a long-term career in dog training.
⸻
Apprenticeship & Career Path
Through our apprenticeship program, you will learn:
* How to train dogs to a reliable, real-world standard (on and off leash)
* Proper leash handling, communication, and control
* Structured obedience from foundation through advanced reliability
* How to safely and confidently handle dogs of all sizes and temperaments
* How to work through behavioural issues ranging from basic manners to more complex cases
* The standards and expectations required to operate as a professional trainer
Advancement to a Junior Trainer role requires passing our internal practical evaluation, demonstrating the ability to train and handle a dog to our standard.
⸻
What the Role Looks Like (Starting Phase)
This role begins with kennel operations and dog handling. This is intentional — it builds the foundation required to become a capable trainer.
Facility & Operations
* Cleaning kennels, crates, and training areas to a high standard
* Maintaining organization, sanitation, and daily routines
* Laundry and equipment upkeep
Dog Handling & Care
* Safely handling dogs of all sizes, including large, strong dogs
* Crating, rotating, and supervising dogs throughout the day
* Assisting with structured exercise and routines
* Monitoring behaviour, safety, and general well-being
Training Development
* Assisting trainers with daily operations
* Observing and learning training systems and mechanics
* Gradually taking on hands-on training as skills improve
⸻
Physical & Work Expectations
This is a physically active, hands-on role. You will be:
* On your feet and moving throughout the day
* Handling dogs that may pull, resist, or lack training
* Working in a fast-paced, structured environment
* Expected to maintain composure, awareness, and control at all times
Confidence, consistency, and attention to detail matter more than prior experience.
⸻

This position is best suited for individuals who:
* Want to build a real, practical skillset
* Do well in structured, high-standard environments
* Are comfortable with physical, hands-on work
