Beware of "Dan" by Callaway Park selling roosters and a hen for 'breeding or eating', or previously selling "Heritage Hens".

- This hen he is selling under "breeding or eating" was returned by us after we got home and noticed the bird was pretty well blind, and then noticed the cataracts and cloudy corneas, and lethargy. We returned this bird to him and he claimed he never noticed this. BUT HE IS NOW SELLING THIS INFECTED BIRD.

- We had also purchased 2 other of these Australorps at the same time, and this morning (thank god we had them in an isolated separate cage) watched them for a bit and noticed a strange twitch every now and then in their heads. Upon taking them out of the cage, noticed both had cataracts in one eye, and cloudyness in the cornea. When calling this time, he did not answer, and even after leaving a voicemail, has not returned the call.

We can only assume at this point he has knowingly sold off an infected flock, as there is no way that 3 for 3 chickens that we bought having the same symptoms is anything other than infection. This guy obviously doesn't care what this does to your flock. There were people ahead of us purchasing these as well. If you have purchased form this guy, they are more than likely infected with Avian Encephalomyelitis (AE), or Marek’s Disease. Both can wipe out your flock, and you need to return them to him or euthanize the chickens.

If you have chickens from him with these symptoms, please report this guy to Mountain View County livestock health, Government of Alberta, Report a diseased chicken seller in Alberta immediately to the Office of the Chief Provincial Veterinarian (OCPV) at 780-427-3448 (or 310-0000 for toll-free) within 24 hours.
