Ebow Plus Guitar Effect Synthesizer
Description
Original collector's item in original packaging with original cassette guide. Still has the original price tag on it for $159.00. Highly sought after.
The EBow Plus (or Energy Bow) is a hand-held electronic device that provides infinite sustain and a range of "bowed" textures for electric guitar. While often called a synthesizer, it actually uses Direct String Synthesis
It produces an electromagnetic field that physically vibrates the guitar string rather than processing the signal through a circuit. How It Works: The unit is powered by a 9V battery and is held in your picking hand. You place it over a single string, and the magnetic loop "excites" the string into a continuous vibration. Infinite Sustain: The string will vibrate as long as you hold the EBow over it and the battery has power. Response: It is highly sensitive to position. Moving it closer to the pickup increases volume and brightness, while moving it toward the neck creates a mellower, flute-like tone.
The "Plus" Features.
The "Plus" model improved upon the original 1970s design by adding a dual-mode switch. Standard Mode sustains the fundamental note you are fretting. Harmonic Mode: Causes the string to vibrate at a higher harmonic (typically an octave plus a fifth or a double octave), creating a feedback-like "shriek" or a shimmering upper-register tone without changing your hand position.
Sonic Capabilities
Because it removes the "attack" of a pick, the EBow allows you to mimic non-guitar instruments: Cello/Violin: By sliding between notes on a single string. Woodwinds: Creating soft, swelling "breathy" tones. Synthesizer Pads: When used with reverb and delay, you can layer tracks to create thick, ambient soundscapes.Techniques & TipsString Channels:
The bottom of the EBow has "guide grooves" designed to sit on the strings adjacent to the one you are playing, which helps stabilize it.
Volume Control: It can be very loud if you drop it directly onto the pickup. Many players use their guitar's volume knob or a volume pedal to "swell" the sound in.
Arpeggios: While it only vibrates one string at a time, you can "rake" it across strings to create broad, sustaining chords.
Note for the Studio: If you're using it for recording (like in Mixcraft), it’s a fantastic tool for creating "organic" synth layers. Since it’s a monophonic tool, many producers record 3 or 4 separate passes of different notes to build a massive, haunting chord pad that sounds more "alive" than a standard keyboard sample.
