1970s Shag Rug | 100% Wool | Conversation Pit / Space Age Vibes

Description
A spectacular 1970s shag rug in a palette of burnt orange, pumpkin, rust, chocolate brown, and deep aubergine.

100% Wool

The scale, colour, and graphic pattern are pure Space Age era design. It has the kind of presence usually found in old magazine interiors, sunken living rooms, bachelor pads, and architect-designed homes from the decade. The oversized circular forms feel almost abstract from a distance, while the deep shag pile creates incredible texture up close.

Produced by Quayle Carpets in Kidderminster, England, this rug comes from one of Britain's most important carpet-making centres. By the 1970s, manufacturers in the region had embraced the bold colours, graphic patterns, and sculptural textures that defined the era, resulting in pieces that feel equally at home in period interiors and contemporary collections.

What makes this piece work so well is the combination of bold pattern and sophisticated colour. It is unmistakably of its time without feeling novelty or kitschy. The tones are rich, earthy, and pair beautifully with teak, walnut, leather, chrome, smoked glass, and other classic 1970s materials.

At nearly ten feet long, this is a substantial piece with remarkable visual presence. Large-format examples in this colourway and condition are increasingly difficult to find, particularly those with documented maker attribution still intact.
