I don't know if you are connected to senior groups, retirement or care homes or perhaps you know a senior who is still at home and has family who could help with their memory, or simply wants to remember their youth.

Over the past five months, my charity foundation has been developing a community initiative called “One Memory at a Time.” It is now used in over 40 retirement and care homes in Canada. It’s a free, gentle memory workbook based on stories from my memoir about my youth. It's designed to help seniors recall and share life stories through simple sensory cues and context — a smell, a place, a sound, a person.

What surprised me is how it’s being used. In several private homes, retirement and care homes, and senior groups, the workbook has sparked conversation, identity, dignity, and connection among seniors who may otherwise feel invisible or disconnected. Sort of like a Tim Hortons without the coffee.

It has now been proven with eight senior organizations in Atlantic Canada, complementing the goal of helping seniors remain socially connected and emotionally engaged while living at home or in care.

The program is completely non-clinical, FREE, and designed for use by families, volunteers, or community programs. My hope is simply that it could be another small tool that helps seniors feel seen, heard, and remembered.
